Playoffs Post

April 17, 2017 at 02:02AM View BBCode

Hoping to break the curse (well really, just been getting beat down repeatedly by Cleveland...like everyone else).

One thing I noticed...Montreal hits a lot of homers, and steals a lot of bases. I expect we will steal A LOT against Brooklyn, as the Bats only threw out 30% of runners this year, but then (and this is totally not to jinx myself), the AL playoff teams were crushing baserunners...Oakland led the league with 46.7% CS rate and CLE wasnt far behind at 43.6% (3rd).

If I am fortunate enough to make it back, maybe I will learn from past mistakes and ease it up on the basepaths and let my hitters hit...we were able to get to a 72% success rate, but that is against some noodle arms...not the rocket launchers in the AL. We hit a lot of HRs and don't strike out a lot...I probably gave up a lot of outs for no reason.

Anyways just a pre-playoff rambling...I figure my baserunning tactics have no impact on opposing strategies anyways (catcher is gonna throw if he can).

Good luck tomorrow everyone.

Backup catcher Hugh Brookens is going to get the nod behind the dish tomorrow, because really there's nothing to lose in trying it. Hugh threw out 10% more runners than Hinrichs, who hardly hits enough to make up for the difference in arms. Honestly, they are both stopgaps until the kids in the system are ready to come up, and it's a weak lineup spot either way.

Well we couldn't get anyone out any other way so you're doing fine.

Best I can tell your strategy of pummel us into submission seems very effective.

:o sorry...not trying to be the breaker of souls over here...

Still gotta win 4 games though so you never know...

I counted a bunch of times where a guy singled, stole 2nd, then scored right after on another single. That's the stuff that makes me want to keep the green light on.

Well that was a thorough and merciless pummeling. My back of the bullpen didn't even take off the warmups the whole series.

Congrats and good luck tomorrow against (fill in blank).

I just realized we seem to be a game behind on the LCS. Hopefully it's not an issue.

Well, it looks like we are on to round 3 of Cleveland vs Montreal! Should be some exciting stuff. Fortunately I am off work tomorrow so I'll be able to watch the games.

There are a couple things however that are different this year...

As opposed to the previous two seasons, Montreal has home field advantage this year. Winning a phenomenal 125 regular season games, including a WHOPPING 23 of their last 24 games in a row including playoffs, has really helped the Montreal faithful remain hopeful that such an advantage will prove worthwhile in the world series.

Also, unfortunately I am down a key hitter in Doug Garcia, while Montreal has no injuries. As always, in Cleveland we are hoping that our dominant starting pitching can lead us to victory.

Everything seems to be going right for Montreal right now so this is an extra tough series which needs to go through Olympic Stadium. Casey Clary's playoff results have been a mixed bag thus far in his career so I'm curious to see what we get in the morning.

Let's play ball.

Well, I guess I know who my ace is now...

Game 1 started off so well for us, up 3-1 into the middle innings, but one lopsided 5 run inning changed that.

Fortunately Ted Perez came out and threw a gem in G2 to pull us back to even.

And on the stolen base front, Montreal is 4 for 6 on SB attempts, although none of them really resulted in any additional runs - one guy scored on a HR and the others were stranded, but there was one CS where we would have scored if we didn't get thrown out. So I'm losing that battle. But smallball was a better approach in G2 for us - we are going to need to do the little things against CLE pitching since runners can be scarce. I dialed it back a little bit but apparently need to do more.

The bigger news is that CLE catcher Jamie McAvoy is done for the series (collision at home plate?)...which offensively really hurts Cleveland. I actually can't tell if he would be back for G7 if it goes that far, or if he's just out long enough to miss that too. As far as running goes, Yulier looks to be more like Yadier, so he should slow the Youps down too.

I was just thinking about it and while it's too late now, I realized that I am severely overmatched in every single pitching matchup - I am now wondering if I should have just tried to avoid Clary altogether by pitching my 3rd or 4th SP against him and using my #1/2 against the others (not that they are easy either).

Although going in, I have to think that my game plan is to try to beat Clary (1A) once with Wheatley, and then let Perez go up against Boots...even though he is basically 1B and Renfroe is 1C. We'll see what happens in G3 but it is pretty clear to me that G4 is huge and I have to capitalize against Patterson, who BTW didn't allow a run in the ALCS. Renfroe won 26 games (plus 1 in the LCS) so that makes me nervous for G3.

CW -

Good series so far at 1-1. I'm glad Clary got his much needed win in. You managed to knock off Boots which was crucial for you. If you look at Boots' playoff stats overall they are otherworldly.

Regarding your question if you should have saved some of your pitchers... I think you always just have to pitch your best as much as you can. Dance with the one who brung ya, if you will.

Losing McAvoy stings tremendously not just because I was already down Garcia but also because Reyes is a subpar replacement, whereas Garcia to Marriott is not a tremendously large dropoff. Oh well... maybe he has some juice left in those 36 year old catcher legs after all! We'll hide him at the bottom of the order and hope for the best.

Good luck the rest of the way.

Game 3 was the tightest game thus far. Ironically enough, it was backup catcher Yulier Reyes who scored the winning run in the bottom of the 8th at the Burrowed Tunnel!

Renfroe bent but did not break, despite Gastright's impressive 11 strikeouts.

Game 4 will be crucial as the Badgers take a two to one lead in the series with Patterson on the mound.

Patterson was respectable but alas Montreal has tied the series at two games to two, after a 4-2 victory. We tried to make it close with a couple runs in the bottom of the 9th however at the end of the day we left 11 runners on base and that's just not going to cut it.

This game 5 is going to be big in defining Clary's legacy in Cleveland. He's at home and there is truly no excuse on this point to not get a huge game from him. I hate the, "he's due for it" argument but that is kinda how I feel. I also would not mind a bit more production from veteran leadoff hitter & 12-time all star Bill Bosley.

Game 5...was a freakshow. It was stressful.

Montreal only allowed 1 ER...and 3 unearned, with boatloads left on base by CLE for the 2nd straight game. Bullpen almost choked it away.

Montreal tied it on an error and somehow got out of a bases-loaded jam in the 8th and the tying runs on with 0 outs in the 9th.

Back to Montreal, but anything can still happen with Boots and Renfroe up for Cleveland. We'll see if Ted Perez can strike twice in a series.

Very stressful indeed. I'm bummed really. Not a good showing by Clary even taking into consideration the unearned run. The based loaded jammed in the bottom of the 8th was painful because backup catcher Yulier Reyes was the guy who couldn't convert, since McAvoy got hurt during the series.

Well, we're on to Montreal. Really could use a masterful Boots Center performance right now.

Nail biter. Not sure how I managed to sneak by. I thought you might pull it off in the bottom of the 9th but I hung on.

On to game 7.

That was a pretty epic down the stretch, I will admit. I'm sad to see my streak stop but that was a hell of a series so I can't complain too much. Maybe we'll do it again next season.

Congrats to Montreal!
