So I was asked...

...the other day, why are you tanking? I didn't reply but my thought was tanking? I'm tanking????
The sender felt that having the 59 overall Shirley as my leadoff hitter and trading Redfern and Rodriguez for 2nd's was my path to a #1 overall utopia.
Allow me to explain:
I dabbled with Mr. Shirley last season when injuries mounted AFTER I traded talent to get 1st round picks. I placed Shirley in the lineup and removed Redfern (a WSH legend with his SB prowess) who was hitting .237 at the time. Until the last 6 games of the season Shirley was hitting .290 and had an OBP of .360 or so.
The off season came and went and Shirley did not improve enough to keep him on the 40 man roster so I waived him after drafting heavy in the P department, there simply was no room for a 59 overall kid with no power.
Flash forward... I am able to move Redfern and Gonzales both either OS 34 or already declining and get 2 2nd's. So with two additional big league roster spaces available and no suitable players in the minors I chose to take Shirley back off the waiver wire in June and put him right back into the lead off spot. A tank move??? Maybe to the naked eye but look at the meat under the skin... the kid is high health, high speed and can bunt and is OS25.
The kid has done nothing but convert from SS to 3B, he is hitting .282 with an OBP of over .350, and steals bases. If I was looking for a fella to help me "tank", man I picked the wrong one.
Just another lesson for those who don't understand the difference between tanking and rebuilding.
If I were tanking, I would have plucked a similar player 9 years older with no chance of improvement. Shirley is OS25 and using him until it is time to make a run will allow him to improve enough to make a difference as a bench player during that run.
So I will not call you out, but to the owner that asked me why I was tanking... check the league history and look at my roster... I know what I am doing. BTW I have a team fighting like hell not to lose 100 games with an average age in the starting lineup right around 26 when all are healthy, I figured I would not drop this far after an 82-80 season last year but no one saw the incredible worst to first story of DET coming and that has contributed to my L total heavily.
Respectfully Submitted,

Looking at your roster I'd say you'll bounce into playoff contention back in 3-4 seasons. Keep doing what you're doing :)
