Wild idea

January 30, 2014 at 08:08AM View BBCode

We're coming up on the mid '90s here in the CPBL, the beginning of MLB's roid boom. What if we all built bandboxes starting in '94 for a dozen years or so to try to juice up HR numbers league-wide to mimic real life? Might be a cool idea, something to talk about anyway.

Ha, sounds fun! I'm down for that as my team stinks anyway. However, I can see why a contending team built around pitching would balk at the idea.

Sounds good to me since my team is built around hitting. And my park is already really small.

Satch McGwire...err, I mean Satch McBride likes the idea.

I guess I will fall into the category of bucking that trend, I will let you guys in the NL build those Williamsport parks, although a few of my guys will love the roadtrips in the AL if the owners over here embrace this trend lol.

Right now in the AL there are three bandboxes, two average, and three large parks, and in the NL there are four bandboxes, two average, and two large parks.

http://simdynasty.com/leaguestadiums.jsp?leagueid=376&mode=list

So it looks like seven of the 16 parks are already there, and looking at the top six teams in homers, three play in a bandbox, two in an average park, and one plays in a large park.

In reverse, looking at the bottom six teams, four play in a large park, and two play in an average one.

There is a definite correlation there, and chicks dig the long ball, so I say go for it!!!

I didn't know about that page. I think I tried to model my stadium after the Oakland A's park.

haha cool, wouldn't have to be everybody, if we're at 7 already, another handful could make a difference. I

Why is L.A.'s stadium, with a wall sum of 1792, "small", but Minnesota's stadium, a bit higher at 1845, is "very small"?

also a little curious that the foul area is measured in tens of thousands of square feet...I'm not a geometrician but that seems large.

oh forgot to add the Criminals will make the switch! next year farewell to The Joint and break in The New Joint in '94.

a variation could be that all the NL teams build bandboxes and all the AL teams build canyons...that would make HOF votes reeeally interesting. And World Series matchups.

I think they look primarily at the measurments down the lines and the power alleys, my guess would be the straight away centerfield measurements would mean somewhat less in the formula, since theoretically more homers go to the power alleys

I always found this curious, if I remember correctly when they rolled out the stadiums and the park factors, the size of the foul area had no impact. What I mean is this is a more cosmetic number. I think they were planning to build it into the code, but it was not used, that is sticking out for some reason, although it may have been fixed at some time...

In Charm City we are on board with the CPBL bandbox stadiums, the city council just passed legislation to build a replica of Camden Yards in south Baltimore, walls moved in of course, thanks to a generous donation made by National Bohemian Beer, Under Armour, and Old Bay.

The stadium will be completed before the 1993 season, word on the street is the power hitters in the Bohs lineup are salivating, the pitchers, well not so much...

here we go...my Joint is now very small (ha). only 3 stadiums league-wide are bigger than "Average", and 10 are "Small" or "Very Small"

I built a very small stadium too.

BTW the foul area is measured in square feet... because area is lenght(ft) x width(ft) and ftxft=ft².

Ok, I want to build a tiny ballpark as well, but I'm not really sure how all the measurements work. Anyone have good tips on how to get as small and allow as many HR as possible? Is wall height anywhere near as important as distance?
paulcaraccio

wall height is the same as distance. so if the distance is 320 and the height is 20, ABE just thinks of it as 340.

early returns on the CPBL roid era...

compared to my other 2 dynasty leagues, it looks like HR are up...but runs are about the same.

Range of Team HR:

CPBL 38-93
MML 27-81
WSL 41-82

Range of Team Runs:

CPBL 199-367
MML 202-399 (2nd is 344)
WSL 215-360

the top 4 teams in HR here would all lead both other leagues, but not by much. Doesn't seem to be much of an effect?

I have not seen the big power numbers that I was expecting, then again the AL has had an influx of pitching talent, but the Bohs have not responded like I had anticipated...

Kind of thought we weren't scoring as many as expected, thanks for confirming that with some numbers. I think we need to bring the fences in more if we're going to find a guy to break McGwire's record!

lol, my fences can't come in any farther, i'm at the minimum allowed range of 1750.

McGwire's record?

Are you one of those Yankee fans that still thinks Mark McGwire didn't break 61* in 1998?

No..we are talking 90's! I thought the skinny little guy that turned into the Hulk from SF did it it the 2000's...but I could be mis-remembering. LOL

Being a Twins guy and recalling the steroids era is a real bad deal. Their only two championships were in 1987 and 1991. Might have won a couple more if not for the Canseco and McGwire led Oakland A's.

hey it was in all of baseball not just Oakland. And the powers that be let it happen.

lol, gotcha...steroids were the bomb, it was tight when Pettitte was throwing 94 mph instead of 89 for a few years there...even though he only HGH'd that one time when he was injured ;)

Cincinnati will not join your Great America Smallpark revolution. I like pitcher parks.
