Reminder about tanking

May 28, 2010 at 01:38AM View BBCode

I want to remind everyone of the following:

Tanking in System 3/4 Speed Leagues:
Owners in Speed leagues that use system 3 or 4 minor league improvements must either 1) Put their team in a position to win the most games or 2) Put their team in a position to best develop major league players. It is unacceptable to develop your team only in the minors and play an entire major league roster of scrubs. If you see a team in your league that does not meet these criteria, please post a private note in Support. We then may contact the owner in question for an explanation of why he is playing the players he is playing and come to a decision.

If I see blatant tanking from teams (I.E. starting a 21 y.o. terrible player when I see a worthy starter who is 31 y.o. sitting on your bench) I will be contacting you to change your lineup. If it continues I will be contacting Admin and allowing him to deal with the issue as well.

I can understand the desire to develop younger players but DO NOT start a 20 something y.o. B- overall player with an A- overall player on your bench that plays the same position.

This isn't an attempt at ruining your plans of development but rather an attempt at making the league slightly more realistic. No Major League team would position themselves that way so I ask you follow the same spirit in managing your teams. Thanks for your understanding and most of all your cooperation in making this happen!

Also, don't read my use of the word "tanking" as simply someone purposely making their team lose. I am not implying that that is the case.

I know several occasions arise where you'd like to up your mentoring and that can be difficult to achieve sometimes, especially if your team is young. I simply ask that you do your due diligence in trying to maximize your teams potential rather than sitting all of your studs.

I'm not looking to micro manage all of your rosters or anything to that effect so please don't take the post in that manner. I want you all to manage your teams however you see fit. I just wanted to remind everyone that there is a site wide policy and that I would like to avoid any really obvious cases where you weren't maximizing your teams potential.

Thanks again.

Personally, i dont really like this 'written unwritten rule' or whatever you want to call it... its way too vague and up for interpretation and everyone has a different opinion on whos a scrub or not etc.

Id much rather just put in a loss penalty, that way nothing is up for interpretation and everyone can manage their team however they see fit as long as they meet the minimum win requirement to not lose spots in the draft.

The 400 club(now the Ted Williams League) has a great system with a loss penalty and a lotto. I think we should adopt something similiar to it. Maybe not the lotto if some are opposed to it but the loss penalty at least.

I agree--vagueries are always open to interpretation.

I don't like lotto's. The variable development should mitigate draft order a little without penalizing legitimately bad teams.

I do like loss penalties. It prevents selling off everyone and rewarding teams who lose...

Admin enforcing any tanking is plenty imo.

I am against any loss penalty and always will be. Especially with that eye staring at me.

Penalties don't work, people just trade away their penalized draft picks in my experiences.

Again, I thought i mentioned it quite well. I'm not being nit picky. Only blatant observations. a 30y.0. C/B- starting over a 30y.o. A-/B+; stuff like that.

Anti-tanking is one of, if not the, hardest thing to govern against. There are loop holes for every system that i have seen implemented.

And you are exactly correct, the definition of tanking is very interpretive. One persons view is not the same as anothers.

Honestly, don't let it concern you at all. Continue doing what you are doing just be mindful of it...
