Devastation in Haiti

Today, Haiti, the 1st Black Republic in the World and 2nd country to declare independance in the Western Hemisphere suffered a colossal disaster. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the capital city of Port Au Prince where more than 2 million people make their home. More than a dozen aftershocks measuring greater than 4.5 have struck throughout the evening and night. Power is out throughout the area and it has been difficult to get through to anyone. My mother-in-law and many of my friends and extended family live in the epicenter of the quake. I was able to reach one of my friends who was away at work in Delmas, some 30 miles to the north of the epicenter, and her workplace was miraculously spared of most damage. As she drove back towards her home she was speaking to me on her cell phone. All she could say over and over was that Haiti is devastated and broken. "Priye pou nou! O Bondye!" ( Pray for us, oh my God!) She asked me to pray for all of our loved ones, and the people of Haiti. I ask anyone here in the simdynasty community, if you would like to, to pray for Haiti as well.Zoom

My cousin spent time this fall in Haiti building shelters. I will continue to keep the Haitians in my thoughts.

Oh my goodness. Was reading about how awful this is today. I had no idea that powerful earthquakes even struck that region of the world...I wish the best for your family, Zoom.

i did think the story about the guy who drove 100 miles to port-au-prince to try and find his wife and ended out digging her out of the rubble alive was a great story in an otherwise awful happening.

reading about that i don't really know what to add. just a horrible, horrible tragedy, obviously. hopefully the various countries offering help can get aid down there as quickly as possible. my thoughts are with anyone who has loved ones affected.i did think the story about the guy who drove 100 miles to port-au-prince to try and find his wife and ended out digging her out of the rubble alive was a great story in an otherwise awful happening.

if you would like to send mony to help, I encourage you to consider Partners in Health at www.pih.org or www.yele.org. The Red Cross is fine too but the ones I mentioned will have immediate impact and less red tape.

Update in Haiti

I wanted to followup with a quick note of good news. My mothe in law and her household are alive and out of harms way. The house is destroyed but at least they are all alive. My godmother's mother was killed however as well as my wife's godmother's mother, brother and the wife and children of two of her brothers all perished in the same collapse. It's so overwhelming and I want to got to Haiti with my wife as soon as possible. Don't believe the CNN and mass media portrayl of Haitians as being irresponsible raucus at the food lines. Frankly, the neighborhood my wife is from has yet to receive a single truck. We are praying someone will come soon or else the rescue effort is going to only be a recovery/clean up exercise.if you would like to send mony to help, I encourage you to consider Partners in Health at www.pih.org or www.yele.org.
