Best pitcher when in their prime

April 02, 2009 at 06:06AM View BBCode

For me, since watching in my lifetime, it's Pedro Martinez, being a red sox fan I might be a little biased but I really dont think so, the guy was unbelievable everytime he took the mound, he could walk the bases loaded on purpose, then throw 9 straight strikes to K the side, what's everyone else think? whos been the best pitcher when they were in their prime?

could pedro handle the volcanoes the way greg maddux could?

think about that one and get back to me.

Greg Maddux is the Chuck Norris of volcano slayers. Pedro is just a baseball player.

But he didn't, did he? He just pitched like every other pussy out there, "trying to get people out." Lame. Pedro's a vagina.

what was great about pedro was, he was so great, he could have it both ways really.

if the manager came and took him out, it was "i could have win that game." if the manager left him in, it was "the manager should have take me out."

or the real standy: "if the mets were no so viados, i win all playoff."

(Do you have any evidence he said this? Because most pitchers will never make this sort of statement, and I don't remember him saying it after game 7 in 2003.)

lol. i was just kidding. none of that stuff was ever pedro's fault. i mean, the games he lost in the playoffs with the mets, he gave up nothing, the hitters were trying to make him win 0-0 or something. he was never much of a whole game pitcher, it doesn't mean he wasn't a great pitcher.

I see. You were just being a dick (not that I disapprove, it's just important to know where we all stand. I mean, I think it's kind of silly to call someone like Pedro out for something he didn't do, but very plausibly could have, but if that's your thing, more power to you.)

well, i don't actually know pedro. if he read this forum, he would probably grab me by the head and throw me down. even though i actually think he is awesome.

(i was just kidding. but pedro couldn't know that.)

In my lifetime...Maddux & Pedro. But overall....Walter Johnson. No one won more while pitching for a losing team. Imagine if he played for McGraw or Mack. That 417 would be a lot higher.

I saw Pedro pitch a lot of time at the Olympic Stadium and he was the best pitcher that I have seen. He was a god over here in Montreal and then we got Vladimir Guerrero and all fans fall in love with him

Pedro's best season was in 2000. 18-6, ERA of 1.74, 11.8 K/9, 1.3 BB/9, WHIP of 0.74.

Maddux had his best in 95, IMO. 19-2, 1.63, 7.8, 1, 0.81

Both were great pitchers in their prime

Who am I? Only I alone will ever know. Actually just a regular guy that works a 9 to 5.

Pedro has done that actually, walked bases loaded then K'd the side, and no I can't give exact examples I just know he's done it many times, but at the same time was a great control pitcher too.

I am a big red sox fan but that's not why I think he was great, and at first, Pedro didn't blame grady little for keeping him in, but in an interview a few months later he did say, well Grady is the manager, I am obviously not gonna say take me out of the game, he never really came out and said he should have or shouldnt have but hinted toward different things

Statistically, Pedro Martinez has the best 3-4 year span for a pitcher in major league history.

You can certainly make the argument for Pedro 1997-2000 but there are several others that can be argued for as well. Its also pretty clear that in 1997-98 Pedro wasn't even the best pitcher (Clemens) but you can argue Randy Johnson (99-02) Grove (30-32) Koufax (63-66), Johnson (10-13) Mathewson (03-08), Maddux (92-95) and countless others that can be in the argument.

Sandy Koufax '63 to '66! (Yes, all those others deserve consideration as well.)
