Why I made the Deal

Rather than have me analyze every trade I thought I'd start a thread where owners can offer their own reasons for their trades.Feel free to play, or comment on analysis.

A trade has been completed between the Cincinnati Cobras and the Cleveland Buckeyes. The Cleveland Buckeyes receive Draft Pick - 2004 Round 3 (CIN) from the Cincinnati Cobras in exchange for [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=4183150]Dummy Dahlen[/url].
By the beginning of 2003 I'd made the decision to begin the rebuild. A multi positional backup OS35 year old is pretty much worthless for a rebuilding team so I dealt out Dahlen for a 3rd round pick.
With the "no CP" minor league system a 3rd rounder can have some value, I ended up with [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=5552925]Carl Williams[/url] a long shot relief prospect with decent control.

Well now the rebuild was official. This was one of the most difficult deals I've made, I loved Dunlop and he was only 30 with A+ power both ways and good speed but he had to go if I was going to add assets. We tried about a dozen permutations and combinations, I really wanted [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=4868663]Urbino[/url] but Albiez wouldn't budge so I took this deal.
I really like Gallegher, he's got great power and red letter health and was only OS24. My faith in him appears justified as he had a solid rookie year and should be a solid regular, maybe occasional All Star, for a decade. Bennett isn't a sure thing but he's got room to grow and might be a 200-250 at bat guy platooning against RHP if he can get to A+/B+.
I knew the first round pick would be #15 or 16 but I didn't know the draft would be so weak, but that's a risk you take when acquiring picks. I ended up with [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=5552871]Ezell "Easy" Barnes[/url] a hard throwing left handed teenager who needs to get seriously luck with control improves to contribute, but I was stunningly short on pitching depth so he'll stay in the system as long as possible. I had him ranked 10th overall.

Another compromise, this started as my offer of [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=4353003]Pembleton[/url] for Sherry and [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=5086996]Pinson[/url] but Pinson was not to be had so we ended up here. I still think Pembleton is a better pitcher than Grey but Grey is younger and has very nice numbers.
I wanted to get back an ML ready pitcher and a top prospect in any deal for Grey or Pembleton and I think accomplished that here.
Sherry is a reasonable #4 and will still be around to help in five years and I really like Champion. Champion improved almost a full grade last year and has another two years of prime improves, his arm might be questionable at SS but we'll see. The pick is in 2005 so maybe the pool will be a little deeper.

Philadelphia approached me with this, and it was an easy call. I was about to waive both Polcyn and Cambell, and Duvall could at least fill a role as a back of the bullpen/emergency starter type guy. Philly might be able to get a decent return from this with the new minor systems, but this was really a case of me getting a mediocre player for the present in exchange for two potentially mediocre players in the future.
Polcyn will always be a "what if" type of guy for me - he was drafted as a 19 year-old with a great bundle in the third round of the same draft where I picked up [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=4868667]Ariza[/url], [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=4868663]Urbino[/url], and [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=4868592]Pablo[/url]. I also had [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=4643507]Arcadio[/url] needing CPs, and snagged [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=4868551]Ruhlman[/url] off of waiver. I was able to trade for 5 CPs, but not 10, and decided to CP Ruhlman over Polcyn because I felt like I had enough pitching. No one wanted to trade for him because they had their own prospects from the deep draft, so instead of becoming a great set-up man or pretty good closer, he's doomed to a career of mediocrity. Drafted six seasons to early for the current system, a real shame...

The Cleveland deals

Roosters summed up my trades with him pretty well. I was a little surprised that he took what he got over the offer of Ruhlman and a first, and was kind of happy he did at the time, because I tend to value contact and even bundling more than most. But with Gallegher's amazing improves over the last off-season, and health that's proved to be maxxed out, I like this trade a lot more from roosters' standpoint. I don't miss Bennett or the first rounder all that much, and they may end up being semi-useful to him in rebuild mode, so that's fine for both of us.

Pittsburgh was interested in both Palacios and Gallegher, and offered me a deal of 2 2nds and Smythe for them. After packaging Gallegher in the Dunlop acquisition while keeping Ruhlman, I just didn't have a place for Palacios to play regularly. I'm happy with this deal, as Smythe will be a servicable middle reliever in the future, and with the new CP system the pick could end up being useful as well, depending on the draft. Palacios just wasn't going to be a major contributor to my team, and his development had been harmed in 2002 when I was literally on a boat for most of the season and wasn't able to get him into the starting line-up.

It's a cold world out there, and sometimes I feel like I'm getting a frosty myself.
I love Masterson, and he played a huge role in my team winning four titles in the last five years. Trading for him and [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=4024172]Rip Fairbank[/url] is what really put my team over the top and propelled us onto our current run. But I had an idea that I could swing him to Chicago or somebody else for a little bit more than it would cost me to get an older but roughly as good player like Lopez, or a younger but worse starter. With Urbino looking very good and still improving, my goal was either to extend my window a little bit, or improve my minors.
With Masterson's velocity at B, and losing 7 points a year starting next season, I think that he and Lopez will be about as good as one another for the rest of their careers. I don't have much experience with declining stars, so this is admittedly a little bit of a gamble and I could quite likely end up being wrong. But at the moment I feel like I managed to pick up some position in the first round, as well as another second round pick, without sacrificing much of consequence for the present or future.
Of course, it might all blow up in my face, and maybe I should have kept both Masterson and Lopez as insurance against injury. We'll have to see! In was another kind of unconventional, sideways-seeming deal like this I was able to pick up Mahler in exchange for Noonan, and I feel like that helped me tremendously in the long run.

I really worship at the Temple of Power, it covers up a variety of other sins for me, which is why I chose Gallegher, and Bennett, over Ruhlman. My process was that Ruhlman's bundle negated any chance of him getting above A- in power and Gallegher's health was the kicker.
Gallegher's improves were sweet, and that's the X factor. I still think it's one of those "Win/Win" deals in that Boston gets the A+ power guy in the middle of the order to keep the run going and I get one or two blocks for the future.
As a side note, Gallegher hit 8th all season for me and drove in 97 runs while hitting .246 and slugging less than .400, that's a pretty amazing stat.

Oh yeah, I'm still happy with it on my end, no real second thoughts here. I of course like power as much as the next guy, but when it's all said and done I happen to pay my observances at the Temple of OBP. Just an interesting case of two people with different philosophies - in the end I think that both of them (Ruhlman and Gallegeher) are going to have similarly good, but not great, careers. Just good in different ways.

Pittsburgh approached me with this deal, which surprised me a bit as I didn't think they'd be in an aggressive buy mode, but I guess Gerry read the tea leaves and saw that the time was right.
I hadn't really thought about moving White too much as I was more focused on trying to deal out [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=4024021]Salazar[/url] at the time but this deal had one major incentive for me that others didn't and that was Kovacs. Kovacs was 17 all year, and has 3 more years of prime teenage improves left, he has a great bundle, red letter speed and reasonable defense and health. Decker added minor league pitching depth, something I had zero of, Tate has the chance to get to "solid #4" status and the 1st round pick was a year out so I could hedge my bets.
Overall I got 5 pieces and Pittsburgh got a legitimate #1 Starter and solid Outfielder, both with a few years left. This is another win/win deal but it only really works for me if Decker makes a contribution or the 2005 draft is a good one. Still I really like Kovacs and Tate fills a spot in the rotation while we rebuild, and maybe Tate gets lucky in OS25/26 and makes A- overall. I used the 2nd round pick to acquire [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=5553021]Darrow Nash[/url] who will benefit from the new CP system by getting 2-3 years of minor league improves to develop, I'm not holding my breath but if his control gets to A- he might work out OK. The 1st rounder turned into [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=5697517]Gabriel Bird[/url], one of my many "suspect" pitchers taken late in round ones over theyears.
I really made this deal because I was frustrated by my inability to move Salazar and wanted to get a prime return on Pembleton while I could. I broke it down as Kovacs and the #1 for Pembleton and the rest for White, and I'm good with that.

This is another win/win deal but it only really works for me if Decker makes a contribution or the 2005 draft is a good one. Still I really like Kovacs and Tate fills a spot in the rotation while we rebuild, and maybe Tate gets lucky in OS25/26 and makes A- overall. I used the 2nd round pick to acquire [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=5553021]Darrow Nash[/url] who will benefit from the new CP system by getting 2-3 years of minor league improves to develop, I'm not holding my breath but if his control gets to A- he might work out OK. The 1st rounder turned into [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=5697517]Gabriel Bird[/url], one of my many "suspect" pitchers taken late in round ones over theyears.
I really made this deal because I was frustrated by my inability to move Salazar and wanted to get a prime return on Pembleton while I could. I broke it down as Kovacs and the #1 for Pembleton and the rest for White, and I'm good with that.

From my end I got a youngish starting OF with red letter power for a spare part and the 48th pick in the draft. My feeling was that Barcelo had at least a chance to produce while Beane never would. At this point Barcelo is sucking out loud but I'm willing to give him at least a full year to see what he can do.

As soon as NYN lost the tie breaker, I sent him a U2U. To lose like that is B.S. Then I asked if he was going into rebuild and if so, was he going to tear it all the way down. Reply was all the way down. Everyone was focused on the playoffs, I was focused on the deal. I looked up the Black Hats offer on the trade board, didn't know he was going into rebuild too. I already had worked out a deal for Redman & added the players I felt it would take to get Skrmetta. I sent a U2U & a deal before he posted his intentions to the league. He accepted.
This deal wouldn't have went down if we, the league, did not talk NYN into making a run for the playoffs that season. I told him as soon as the Black Hats deal for Skrmetta goes down ... I'll send the deal for Redman. This never happened because he made the run. By the way, Dick Croucher was the only player off the table in this deal.
I waited all season to find out NYNs intentions and acted as fast as I could to get both players. My window of opportunity is now and I had to do everything I could. 2R thanks for passing on the Wade for a #1 DP. I passed on some trades & other teams passed on some trades I sent ... I was fortunate.
NYN is rebulding, lots of good players for him but he missed his opportunity in the draft and I recieved the studs I wanted.
