Pedro vs the Cubs

September 25, 2008 at 08:52PM View BBCode

Can he win?
I like this match-up, Martinez against Harden. Not because of the drama surrounding the fact that the Mets are in a dog fight with the Brewers and Phils for a wild-card spot, but of the fact that it's youth versus experience. Yes, I will admit that Pedro will never be the same fire-balling pitcher that he once was. Yes Harden (who is 10-2 since coming to the cubs) will be tough for the Mets, but I still think that Martinez (whom the cubs haven't faced in over 10 seasons) still has some tricks in his arm without the velocity he was known for.

I dont think pitcher matchups are particularly interesting seeing as how pitchers dont interact with one another (i mean, i know pitchers hit, but pitchers dont like...pitch at each other at the same time or something...)

I think it's safe to say that Pedro is [url=http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs.aspx?playerid=200&position=P&page=0&type=mini]at the end of the line.[/url] Strikeouts are way down, walks are way up, and home runs are way up. He's done.

And Rich Harden is only 5-1 with the Cubs.

The Cubs should be doing all they can to give their last three games away to the Brewers so they can get a first round bye instead of having to play a real team in the first round.

Yes, playing against the pathetic 4th seed in the NL is almost a guaranteed victory. After all, no one from the NL West or with an 83-78 record can make it to the world series.

(Read: Colorado Rockies and St. Louis Cardinals)

(LA is the 3rd seed)

The Rockies were a legitimate team, despite the late season run, and 5 game series have a lot of randomness involved, but it's still better to go up against a average one than a good one.

I can't bring myself to cheer for the Cubs to face any of these teams in particular, so I've just stopped watching games until the playoffs. Maybe I'll follow the AL for a week. I mean, logically, I'd rather face the Dodgers. But I'm already nervous to a pretty embarrassing extent about this censored , so motherfuck logic.

I'm glad those Arizona motherfuckers are out of it, though (I think Hamilton dude is a D-Backs fan, so just in case, sorry, Hamilton dude). The Cubs suck at the BOB (is it still called that?), and they'd almost certainly lose at least one at Wrigley. Probably game 5.

Well, how much did he actually own? Because anyone who held stock in the Tribune Company owned part of the Cubs. Probably.

edit: Also, motherfuck Wednesday's game being at 5:30, on a channel I don't have. I'll miss the first few innings, and then I have to take the bus to my friend's apartment to watch it. So...argh.

he owned 1:10,000th. He actually had a share of the team, not a share of a company that had a share of the team. The official share is actually hanging in his house. its pretty cool. This was when the wrigley brothers owned the team. Supposedly the wrigley brothers owned like 9,800 or so of the shares, they gave away 100 or 200 over the years, so there werent all too many owners. his grandfather (i think grandfather...) was the police chief for Chicago in the 20s and got a share of the team as his wedding gift. When the Wrigleys decided to sell to the tribune, they had a "vote" (even though it obviously doesnt matter how he voted). he voted against selling the team and lost 9,999 shares to 1. mr Wrigley called him to ask why he voted against it, and my dad's friend tried to talk him out of seling.

Apparantly if i go to chicago, he can hook me up with owners box tickets. I dont know if thats actually true.

My dad and his friend are known to tell tall tales, but i would guess that some decent amount of that is true, and I know for a fact that he owned 1 10,000th of the team.

That's actually a pretty interesting story, although the "9999 to 1" thing sounds very dubious.

According to a note [url=http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070404&content_id=1879681&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc]here[/url], the Wrigleys owned about 80% when the Cubs were sold to the Trib.

Yea.

His share would be worth over one hundred thousand dollars, if he still had it today.

Well, the Tribune sale wouldn't have allowed him to keep his share. I assume that he got a check for the 2K or so that he was owed from the sale.

Hmm, 80%, well there you go. I was looking it up, looked like the wrigleys were minority owners when they first owned the team, and they bought up a lot of the other shares, but not all of them. it might have been 15% owned by 1 or 2 guys from back in the day. All i know is that there werent a whole lot of owners.

I couldnt imagine anyone voting for the sale who only had one share. Who cares about 2,000 dollars when you get to own the CUBS? but maybe people voted for it because they knew there was no point.

I agree that 9,999 to 1 is dubious, however Im relatively certain that Wrigley did call him. I would also assume it was true that he gave him the number to the front desk and said if he wanted owners box tickets, he was sure they would be able to work it out for him, but he hasnt done it even once in the past 20 years, so who knows if thats still the case (or even if it was true in the first place). Idve gone like every year, made sure to get somewhat of an entitlement to it instead of letting the opportunity slip away. itd be badass to be in the owners box.

All this Cubs talk reminds me that the Brewers made the post season. I was very young watching the 82 W.S. on the little TV in my folks room when Thomas struck out.
