I could never do it when I was in little league, some sort of autonomic anti-injury mechanism, I guess.

i did put that up there, about not getting there faster, but i am full of it. a lot of folks believe you get there faster. but like i said, you get dirt down the front of your pants. who the hell wants dirt down the front of their pants?

also: pete rose. douchebag.

but rose actually invented the headlong, career ruining, running shoulder block into a promising young catcher in a meaningless all-star game. that alone should have secured his place in the HOF.

Alright, good. I was actually going to say that I thought you got there faster (because you can take another step or two at full speed, I think), but I didn't want to be horrendously wrong.

well, you, of course, would not actually get there faster. but a normal human being would.

Alright, fair enough. You (ME's arch nemesis) wouldn't.

I bet he screwed up the math.

I bet in his theoretical world a player dives such that his finger literally touches the base the moment he hits the ground. You would need to dive earlier than that to get underneath the tag.

not to mention that there is a matter of where your strength is, and how fast you can do certain things. It just isnt as easy as doing a math problem.

I bet the Ph.D. engineer is right and you are wrong.

1) i bet he said that if he was forced to guess, it would be the headfirst slide. There are too many other variables to consider to prove it as mathematical fact.

2) ""Mathematically, you might think there's an advantage, but leaving your feet is actually a detriment because you're no longer pulsing (pumping your legs) and you start to decelerate," he says. "When you're running, your get your feet out in front of the center of gravity, so you're getting maybe three or four steps of an advantage.""

Thats right, if you "leave your feet", the other guy will beet you by "3 or 4 steps."

First, you normally dive with less than 3 or 4 steps remaining, so how could you lose by that much?

Remind me to not sign up for grad school at university of washington in StL.

Yes, the other guy will "beet" you. You ... are a disaster.

Nah, nevermind, im sure this one page fluff piece and (possibly out of context) quotes from one person is enough to form a law of nature on.

Yes, because "methods for sliding into a base" constitute a law of nature.

"it takes two" only means greater than one. more than two fits the description.

You push into your dive with 4 or 5 steps remaining or else you are gonna be tagged very hard in the noodle if the throw is close. head first is important to be "sliding" not "flying" when you come to the bag otherwise you are going to get hurt.

point is, there is no way that you are going to be beaten by "3 or 4 steps" by someone who is running.
