Well guys, if we are going to talk about the best all around then I think you have to go with Babe Ruth. He could pitch AND he could hit. On top of that, the level of his sheer dominance compared to what other teams were doing... He completely changed the way the game of baseball was played. He hit more HRs than most TEAMS did in his time... and that was BEFORE he got close to hitting 60. And before he even did all that with a bat he was a stud pitcher. I think Barry Bonds is far and away the best player post-1980s and it's not really that close. I also think he's significantly better than Willie Mays, although defense closes the gap somewhat, but that's neither here nor there. (OPS+ compares hitter OPS to league averages and Bonds buries Mays in that regard)
