Unfortunately, nearly all of my pitching prospects have higher velocity than control.

sorry, this will be the lazy man's version...just the totals (my beloved Dodgers are on - and losing)

16. Texas 0 points. Not a good sign as one of the weakest teams overall at the major league level.
15. Washington 1. See above.
14. New York A 3. Could be a case of the haves and have nots in the AL if this continues.
13. Milwaukee 5. The talent has graduated to the majors.
12. Philly 6. The beginning of a downturn? With Pipgras in the majors the minor league cupboard is bare.
10. Pit & Balt 7.
9. Boston 8.
8. Chicago 10
7. Cincy 11
4. Stl, Mon & Brook 12
2. Detroit & Cleveland 15. 10 of the Losers' points are from young pitchers, so total is a bit inflated.
1. New York Blue Sox 22. Good all=around system and should start to challenge in two years or so.

Detroit isn't inflated at all.

Mike Garcia and Mike Spindel do have D+ and D control... but with some IC luck, they both should end up A+/B pitchers in my rotation by their 24th birthday. (key word: Luck)

Restelli is good too.

Terlecki will be "B+" overall soon and if I've got a good shot at making the playoffs with him in the rotation (meaning I can stand to lose a few game), I'll move him up.

Hemond is not good. I doubt he got any points. There's a shot he could be B- overall around 22 and might have trade value as a throw in.

Hitting wise, Kinkade and Farmer are going to be solid lead-off type hitters. I figure they'll be "B+" or so around age 23. I'll move them into the line-up then.

Brunansky is going to sloooooow down big time with his improves this season. :( He should still be a solid power hitter in 2 years when I'm ready to move him up.

And let's face it... this was not a good draft... When there's nothing out there, you just gotta draft young and hope that something pans out.

(PS. thanks for doing this stuff, Nuzzy, even the abbreviated version. it's a good thing.)

Terlecki hit B+ with his 1st improve. Hemond already hit C+ at 20 and has an outside shot for "B" around 23... with luck.

I believe we're using the gem/bust/variable development model now? Was this put in?

1979 report coming.....

SP

17YO: 1. Heine Lucas Was C; Comment: Lucas, with his D- control isn't very good and I be surprised to see him ranked in the top three when he's 20.

18YO: 1. Roy Mitterling Cin C+; Frank Carroll Phi C; 3. Paul Malave Mon C+. Comment: As an illustration to the point above, Montreal's Joel Pineiro isn't ranked and he has similar letter grades to Lucas. Carroll favoured over Malave because he's D+/B- to Malave's B+/D+

19: 1. Jim Merritt NYN C+' 2. Cameron Mazza Det B-; 3. CRash Griffith NYA C. Comment: Merritt's C-/B to Mazza's B+/c.

20: 1. Dick Bigelow STL B; 2. Sam Greene Det B; 3. Sam Curtis NYN B. Comment: Not much to choose from between Bigelow and Greene as they have identical pitching letters so the guy with A+ health gets the nod.

21: 1. Edward Mouton Cin B; 2. Ken Netzel Mon B; 3. Lou Allison Mon B+; Comment: Control with this age group isnt where it should be with the exception of Mouton.

22: 1. Dick Etherton Cle B; 2. Frank Simmons STL B+; 3. Jeff Goggin STL B. Comment With A- control Etherton is a future all-star. Hooty will have two-fifths his rotation with these guys. There are other useful pitchers in this group like Bevan and Shoupe.

Minor League standings

1. Cin 10
2. STL 9
3. NYN, Det 6
5. Was, Cle 5
7. Phi 3
8. NYA 1

RP

17: None

18: 1. Herb Wells Cin B-; 2. Gary Smith Was B-; 3. Adam Govani Det C+. Comment: Wells is the class act here.

19: 1. Emil isley Was C+; 2. Joshua Zarrabi Det C+. Comment: The first three age groups only has one pitcher above C- control. Bleh.

20: 1. Doug Mora Pit B; 2. Jaden Feddock Det B-; 3. Rich Brown Cin C+. Comment: Tough age group to rank. I really don't like any of them, but there's only three pitchers here. In descending order v/c A+/C-; A-/C; and D/A-.

21. 1. Matt Kelly Bos B; 2. ed Walsh Phi B+; 3. Matt Caldwell Was B-. Comment: Kelly gets the edge because of his A- control.

22: 1. Joe Baptist NYN A-; 2. Nick Jacobs Mil B+; 3. Jeff Jane Was B. Comment: Got to love an A- player at 22! Jacobs could end up the better overall pitcher though.

Standings.

4. NYN 11
5. Stl 9
6. Phi 6

Starting pitchers

17yo: None

18yo: 1. Heine Lucas B- was; 2. Bertell C Was. Comment: Lucas saw his control go from D- to D+ last season. I'm still not sold on him, but Bertell is C/C

19yo: 1. Jim Teed, B, Bos; 2. Mitterling C+ Cin; Carroll 3. C+ Phi. Comment: Easy to see why Teed was the number one pick in the 1980 draft. In the battle for second best Mitterling had 11 improves to Carroll's 19. be interesting to see if that trend continues.

20: 1. Mazza B det; 2. griffith B- NYA; 3 Merritt C+ NYN.

21. 1. Bigelow B+ Stl; 2. Greene B+ Det; 3. Asbell B Cin

22. 1. Netzel B+ Mon; 2. Allison B+ Mon; 3. Stabelin B- NYA
