Really?! I hadn't noticed.

It's not like these were big contract that got dealt out. Both players were very affordable for their skill sets.

You guys got Max Scherzer, who will be much better than Edwin Jackson. Be happy.

Curtis Granderson was the centerpiece of the deal and I fail to see how we got value for him.

the tigers got austin jackson, who, someday soon will grow into an elite player.

as a yankees fan, i have mixed emotions. on the one hand, they gave up prospects (which they always seem to do) and probably wont sign back both damon and matsui, but on the other hand, we did get granderson.

I am pretty sure Rex Hudler has the trademark on "Figgy," actually.

All reports I see not by Yankee fans/sources say the contrary.

Yeah, Yankees fans are convinced (or will try to convince others) that he's a superstar in the making. Maybe, but there isn't a lot of evidence of that so far. Still, it's at least a semi-defensible deal for the Tigers, who got a package of guys with lots of pre-free agency years left. The Diamondbacks, on the other hand....yikes.

Austin Jackson's ceiling is league-average, at best. Still pretty good, but not the mega-stud that Yankee fans make him out to be. They seriously got a great deal for Granderson.

Anyway, my favorite tweet of the day, from Dave Cameron, writer at USS Mariner and Fangraphs:

The D-Backs should hold two press conferences: one to announce the trade, and another to apologize to the fans.

I'm an Orioles fan and they need to acquire a corner infielder. They've been linked to Kevin Kouzmanoff and Dan Uggla. They need to pull in one of these guys. We have enough pieces to be a good team in the near future, but we need to fill these holes: corner infielder, closer, starting pitching. I think they should pony up and make a push for a couple good free agents: Rich Harden and former Oriole Erik Bedard, who can be had at a bargain now. Both have tremendous upside.

Or they could bring both of them in and have injuries all year, the O's seem to be going in the right direction, it seems they have quite a few nice young starters coming up

there's no real reason for the o's to be buyers this year. they've got some nice young talent that isn't ready to compete. why go out and overpay for a bunch of journeymen or injury prone vets that aren't going to help them do anything?

That's a good point, and with Bergesen, Matutz, and Tillman, plus Arrieta who will be arriving next season, there's no need to go out and buy pitching. It would be nice to bring in one veteran who's actually good, and I've heard Bedard is a possibility. As far as corner infielders go, next season will be the arrival of Josh Bell (3b) and Brandon Snyder (1b), so all we need is a stopgap option.

The orioles have a huge amount of pitching prospects. They have next to nothing in the way of hitting prospect, what you see in the majors is basically what they have got. I think you gotta give them at least one to two more years to see how their young pitching fares, because they may need a pitcher or two, and they may not. But they certainly will need some hitters. Wieters, Jones and Markakis are obviously cornerstones of the lineup, they just need some other decent talent (obviously some of their current guys like Robters will hopefully still be good by the time the team is decent.)

So the silliest rumor I heard yesterday was Netfali Feliz and John Smoak for Josh Johnson. The Rangers must really hate pitching prospects.

Johnson had a nice season but both of those guys are most likely gonna be great

Actually, EVERY Yankee youngster is a star in the making. Its really a grand conspiracy(aka cover up) with the commissioners office and ESPN whenever a deal is made like this so everyone doesnt stop going to games. Because-- as you know-- "baseball is better when the Yankees are good"

The only reason Josh Johnson is even in the rumor mill is because the Marlins are allergic to any arbitration-eligible stars, and guys making anything over the league-minimum.

I'm not sure how anyone could look at what Josh Johnson has done in his two full seasons in the majors and not want him. Feliz and Smoak are good prospects, but they are still just prospects with little-to-no major league track record. Johnson is a legitamate #2 major league starting pitcher, assuming he can stay healthy.
