Tough way to lose, NY @ Pit

Pittsburgh completed an unlikely 6 game winning streak against two of the NL's best teams, St. Louis and then New York, on an 11th inning wild pitch. NY @ Pit (04/06/1958)
With their first 5 outings in the bag, the Tartans had to get through three-time 20 game winner Larry Peffer (in only three seasons no less) to get the sweep against the Nitros. Pfeffer held the Tartans early, but Ray Magoon hit a 2-run homer that tied it 4-4 in the 8th. Both bullpens held out until Ed Slagle doubled to lead off the home half of the 11th. After he moved to third on a right-side ground out, Mark Bedell unleashed a wild pitch and the winning run came across.
Can't say I expected this kind of start, nor that I expect it to last. But, we'll take it for now, after the way these guys all schooled us all last year.

It all ends with the heavily favored Mint at their newly constructed stadium. For openers I will introduce you to AJ "Lights-Out" Puerto.

And Bedell has the best control of all my pitchers with his A+. Everyone throws a wild pitch every now and then. This one just had to come in a crucial situation.

Puerto indeed quieted the Tartan bats to end any speculation about how long the opening streak could last. Must have been a nice way to open the "new" stadium for the fans in Philly.
You know sometimes, Reb, the pitcher gets credited for a wild pitch in a case where the catcher really should have been able to block it. Maybe Starnagle muffed one of Bedell's big arcing curve balls or hard-diving sinkers, but it had to be scored a WP since it hit the dirt first.

Yeah Rev, that could have been the case, especially considering Starnagle's "C" range.
