So You Think You Can Draft?

June 04, 2009 at 10:51PM View BBCode

I currently possess three first round picks. If the standings stay the way they are now, I am slated to pick 3rd, 9th and 10th.

According to my rankings, that means I'd end up with Ed Mungo, Jack Carpenter and Mark Chadwick.

Do you think I'm crazy? Do you think there are better players available at those picks? Well, if you send me players that are the equivalent or better of the players indicated, you can have the pick, and prove to me that you know better than I how to utilize the draft pick.

If you think you know better than I, here's your chance for a steal!

Second round picks also available (and if I feel your player is superior to what I'd get at that spot, I'll likely throw in a bunch of late picks too!)

Go ahead! Prove you know more about the draft than I do! (It shouldn't be too hard...)

Send offers to Colorado!

Are you looking for ML-ready players or what?

I find you to be rather optimistic.

So can I assume Dwight that you think these players will go higher than I have them ranked, and are therefore not going to get equivalent players for the picks? I guess that means they the players I have ranked higher will be available when the players I have ranked there are taken before I pick...

Does anyone follow that?

Yeah, that makes sense. What would you want for a second.

Surprise me, Dwight.

I'm always open to dealing 2nds. I find their best use is pairing them with a late 1st to get an early 1st.

All three? I just can't do it, man. Just got Hanning (essentially the same player with a weaker arm and stronger bat) for FAR less. Offers are on the way, though...

I like the Hanning trade. A mutually beneficial deal if I ever saw one.

Unless the entire league is asleep at the wheel, I doubt you'll get Mungo with the 3, Carpenter with the 9, or Chadwick with the 10.

Of course, it's quite possible the entire league is asleep at the wheel... so there's that.

My 1st round pick is at this point 5th overall. Unless I can get one of the two guys I have rated higher, I can guarantee Artistick won't get Mungo, Carpenter and Chadwick.

So I can assume that Todd's rankings differ from mine. If the league agrees with Todd, that means I will be landing players I have ranked HIGHER than these (on my list) when my picks come up.

Maybe not Carpenter or Chadwick, but Mungo? Really? You think he's the second best?

With 5 CPs throughout the minors and normal improves:

Mungo should get to A+/B+
Carpenter A+/A A+/A
Chadwick A+/B A+/B+

Chadwick's a catcher (his arm should get to A) with A health,
so I would likely rank him above the other two.
Carpenter has only C health, but could well be a many times All Star
and with his B- range, he could be converted to 2B
Mungo's an RP with D- endurance, so I'd put him 3rd of the three.

Of course CP availability, etc has to be taken into account.

Yes, Commish, but in a league where pitching is valued so tremendously high, can you really justify drafting a 20 y/o OF over a 17 y/o RP with the same overall rating? I guess with you having more young pitchers than I and me having more young fielders than you, your logic is sound for your team. Me, I need the pitching more than I need an OF...

Chadwick... I guess the reason I am not valuing him as much as I should is because I already have a decent young catcher in Richmond...

Of course, if you want to trade first rounders so YOU have a better chance at Chadwick, I'm game... just need small compensation :D

Mungo will tie up 5 CPs for 5 seasons before he's major league ready as a role player (altho he will be a very good RP). For the same investment Chadwick will start 135+ games as an excellent catcher. So I rate Chadwick higher, but you're right, I do have plenty of good young RPs. And of course there are at least two guys in the draft pool who are better than any of the three we've been discussing :)

you never know what philly will do with first pick....from the looks of it any prospect works for this. My cupboard is entirely bare of decent MLB or minor leaguer now.
