NFL mock Draft

April 23, 2009 at 10:25PM View BBCode

OK, so the time is here and I'm going to put out my mock draft to be mocked

1. DET. The Lions are going to take Matthew Stafford here. I don't really like the pick because early pick QBs in general and underclassmen in particular are crap shoots that set your team back but this is where they're going.

2. STL. Jason Smith. The replacement for Orlando Pace. Should solidify the line for a decade

3. KC. Aaron Curry. A good pick, ranked by some the best player in the draft here.

4. SEA. Eugene Monroe. There is a lot of talk about Mark Sanchez but that would be a horrible pick here. I'm seriously doubtful that Sanchez will be able to throw an NFL deep throw. I've also seen Michael Crabtree here and while that's the sexy pick I think that the offensive line has been as much an issue for this team as anything else over the past 2 years. Benne and Whisky may have other ideas but I'm projecting Monroe here.

5. CLE. Brian Orakpo. I've seen a lot of Michael Crabtree here but from what I hear they really disliked him in the interview. Picking Crabtree here means that Edwards has either already been traded (which would mean the Browns have been more reasonable about his value) or is shortly to be traded. I've also seen some ridiculous trade proposals for this pick but no team has traded into the top 5 in the past decade (roughly-I can't remember the exact year). For me the decision comes down to Orakpo or Maybin and I tend to think that Orakpo is better suited to the AFC North as he plays the run better than Maybin who is more of a pass rusher.

6. CIN. Michael Crabtree. I think that the Bengals are going to be thrilled to see Crabtree still here at 6 and will jump up to grab him. He certainly comes in as a starter replacing Whosyourmamma.

7. OAK. Darrius Heyward-Bey. This would be a horrible pick in the traditional "I'm smarter than everyone else" Al Davis kind of way. He's the kind of player that Davis loves-fast but its way to early for him. They may trade down from here but I wouldn't be shocked to watch this reach here.

8. JAX. Will trade to NYJ. I expect that the Jets are going to aim at this slot to trade up to grab Mark Sanchez. They're desperate to get a QB/face of the franchise in there and I think this is the slot to go get him. I don't really like Sanchez as I stated above but the Jets appear to (as well as Freeman for some reason).

9. GB. Tyson Jackson. I think the decision for the Packers is going to be between Offensive and Defensive line (Jackson or Michael Oher) with the Pack taking their number two defensive lineman rather than the 4th best offensive lineman in this slot.

10. SF. Andre Smith. There is a tendency to put a defensive player in there since Singletary has a defensive background but he clearly understands the games are won in the trenches and will take Smith to anchor the O-line.

11. BUF. Aaron Maybin. A good pass rusher but a bit limited against the run. Buffalo will introduce him with unfair comparisions to Bruce Smith

12. DEN. B.J. Raji. Slips down to Denver at 12 who will be thrilled to grab him with the 12th pick.

13. WAS Robert Ayers. With Jackson off the board, the choice for the Skins comes down to Ayers or WR Jeremy Maclin.

14. NO. There is a thought here to go with a RB, probably Wells is more of a fit in NO than Moreno but the truth is that they desperately need defensive help. Peyton is clearly offensive minded but even he can see how much help they needed in the secondary. With that in mind they're going to take Malcolm Jenkins

15. HOU. Chris Wells. This club has never seen a running back in his prime with the talent of Wells. A clear pick for the team here.

16. SD. I've seen Moreno or Wells go here but I really don't see the Chargers taking a RB this year (maybe next though). If they're looking for offensive help Maclin is likely the pick here (Pettigrew is good but you're not taking him with Gates in the fold). They have to take a DE at some point in this draft and I think they'll do it here with Everette Brown.

17. NYJ- will be traded to JAX. I'm swapping these two as the Jets move up to get Sanchez. I think the Jags will grab the top TE in the league here and grab Brandon Pettigrew.

18. DEN- Rey Maualuga adding another defensive player although they could grab Josh Freeman here but I still don't think he's a first round talent (of course, I didn't think Flacco was last year either)

19. TB-apparently the guys in Tampa really like Peria Jerry in this slot.

20. DET-The Lions would have loved to add Pettigrew here but with him off the board they take some pressure off the QB by grabbing Knowshon Moreno to run the ball. He's the best combination back in this draft in terms of blocking, receiving and running and the Lions are thrilled to get him at 20.

21. PHL-If the Lions let Moreno go the Eagles would grab him to compliment Brian Westbrook but with him off the board the team turns to Donald Brown to fill that roll.

22. MIN-Eben Britton will protect the QB and open holes for the running game and the Vikings snap him up.

23. NE-Clay Matthews fills the hole made by the trade of Mike Vrable to KC

24. ATL-Evander Hood helps shore up the Falcons defensive line

25. MIA-Vontae Davis to provide some help in the secondary for a team that has to face Randy Moss and T.O. twice each season.

26. BAL-Jeremy Maclin stops his free fall as the Ravens finally grab him

27. IND Kenny Britt steps in as the replacement for Marvin Harrison

28. BUF Michael Ohler to replace the player this pick was traded for, Jason Peters.

29. NYG. Brian Robiskie since the Browns haven't come off their ridiculous demands for Braylon Edwards.

30. TEN. Darius Butler as the great defense gets better.

31. ARI. Brian Cushings

32. PIT Eric Wood

Both nationally and locally, the pundits insist we're taking a quarterback (or, at least, not taking an OT). I think passing on Monroe or Smith at No. 4 would be a disaster, but O-linemen aren't sexy. If it's Sanchez I'll have to reconsider my NFL priorities.

skins drafted like 4 receivers last year, i doubt they even consider drafting one this year.

the big rumor is that they trade up to get stafford....

Houston is not taking a running back, they have Steve Slaton. Beanie Wells is not anything close to a good enough value pick to waste a draft pick on when you have a perfectly good young, cheap and healthy option already.

I hope the redskins get a good offensive lineman. is that possible?

the universe has inverted!

I agree wholeheartedly with Giorge's comment about the Texans.

They will take a CB or LB.

Slaton was terrific last season, and proved durable, as many small backs do (emmitt smith, warrick dunn, tony dorsett).

Remember Christian Okoye's short career?

2 of them are worthless and the other is just bad...

I.......really have no idea what Seattle will do with the 4th pick. A lot of the pundits have them either taking Crabtree or Curry, but I don't see it. I'd say it's much more likely they trade down.

(Please, please, please don't take Sanchez)

I could see Detroit taking Curry. He will most definitely not be around when we pick. In order, and trying to be realistic, I'd like to see us:

1. Draft an OT
2. Trade down

That's it -- no Crabtree, no quarterback. Do it right, and do it boring.

(Wow, I do not know any of the players Bryan mentioned aside from the USC guys, and I only know of them because our local newspaper just loves USC. I really slacked in my college football viewing this last season.)

The sexy running backs are Moreno and Beanie Wells, but Donald Brown is going to be better than both of them.

I actually like Moreno out of the RBs as the next in the in the line of the run/receive/all purpose back in the line of Marcus Allen/Marshall Faulk/Brian Westbrook style. I'm not convinced on Brown. Great year last year but the competition in the Big East isn't as solid as I'd like.

I keep hearing Sanchez as the hot commodity even going as high as 2 (if the Rams trade out). I'm somewhat shocked here. I don't really see him becoming a quality NFL starter-I just don't think he has the arm strength to be an NFL QB. I did hear the Seahawks deny they were looking at Sanchez again but its looking like Den or NYJ moving up to get him.

The only reason Sanchez' stock is so high is because he's the second-best option in a terrible QB class (and I'm not all that sold on Stafford, either). If Bradford or McCoy came out this year Sanchez would be lucky to sniff the 2nd round.

I don't understand a QB to the Seahawks either. Their window, whatever is left of it, is now. When Hasslebeck is done, they won't need a starting QB to step in. It will be full rebuild.

I'm sure many teams would love to trade down, but nobody wants to move up just to pay more to the player and take a bigger risk. The NFL has to fix that. Right now, Detroit can't give away that pick.

We should be rebuilding now, hoping Hasselbeck has enough in the tank to maybe exploit a weak NFC West and sneak into the playoffs one or two more times. Still, his successor is not in this draft -- we will probably suck again next year and have a shot at McCoy or Bradford.

I thought the seahawks would destroy the NFCW last year, i mean they arent great, but they looked solid on paper, and the rest of the NFCW sucks. Didnt like...their top 5 WRs get injured or something?

I think it was our top six. But really, it was our defense that killed us -- and that was supposed to be our strength.

I'm just not a big believer in this team, and I think we've put off finding a replacement for Walter Jones for far too long. We didn't draft a single offensive lineman last year, save for a MFCS long snapper.

The Packers picked the much-maligned Aaron Rodgers despite already having a solid veteran, and I don't think they regret it. Of course, their pick was a lot lower, but still, Sanchez would not be the apocalyptic pick that you two are making it out to be.
barterer2002

But there was a difference in the skill sets that Rogers and Sanchez have. Rogers was a good QB coming out of college. Sanchez lofts his deep passes which is OK in the Pac 10 where the CBs don't have the closing speed of an NFL corner but he'll be a disaster in the league.
FuriousGiorge

April 24, 2009 at 08:04PM View BBCode

Yeah, that's nonsense. Rodgers is a Tedford guy, which is the definition of high-risk. You know, after the Ryan debacle which we're talking about in the other motherhumping thread, don't you think it's best to have a wait-and-see attitude about QB's rather than making blanket statements backed up by very little evidence?

You're not going far enough in acknowledging the difference between the fourth and the 24th pick -- we're talking millions and millions of dollars. Unless you really believe that Mark Sanchez can be a franchise quarterback, it's a wasted pick. Me, I'm with Benne -- his stock is only so high because this is an extremely weak quarterback class.
FuriousGiorge

April 24, 2009 at 08:09PM View BBCode

The money is problematic. But yes, I do believe that Mark Sanchez can potentially be a franchise quarterback. And I also think the Seahawks' window is effectively closed. I don't necessarily think they'll pick Sanchez, because I do think that's a little high for him to go, but if they do, I really won't consider it a terrible pick either.

As I look over past QBs I'm firmly convinced that its too much of a crapshoot to warrent taking one too early. In the history of the NFL there have been 25 QBs taken first overall. Of those 25, there are 3 HOF players (Bradshaw, Aikman and Elway) and 9 others who made at least one pro bowl. So 12 of the 25 were good enough to make it to a pro bowl ever in their career. Only 2 of them (Peyton and Bradshaw) were named AP all pro at the end of the season (best player at position that season). Of the 25, 15 of them threw for 10,000 or more yards (including David Carr, Tim Couch and Michael Vick).

To me that makes this position too much of a crapshoot to invest such a high pick.

And yes, we're not talking about necessarily the number one pick for Sanchez but if we expand our numbers to the first 10 picks
This yields us 99 players. 17 of these became AP all pros, 46 appeared in at least one pro bowl and 50 topped 10,000 yards.

Really its a 50/50 proposition for taking a QB early

By contrast, there have been 64 QBs drafted in the 2nd round (including 5 in the past two years). Of these 64, 6 have been AP all pro, 12 have been pro bowlers and 17 have thrown for 10K yards. Its only slightly less of a success rate than we're seeing in the first round

If it were I, I would draft QBs after the top 10, I don't mind a good team like the Packers a few years ago, taking a QB to develop for 2-3 years down the road but I really am biased against taking them in the top ten (although NFL teams do it annually

12 Pro Bowlers out of 64 vs. 46 Pro Bowlers out of 99 is not "slightly less", it is significantly less.

Completion % is all that matters.

the thing people forget is that the reason why plenty of top pick QBs turn to crap is twofold.

1) they are on crap teams, they get hammered in the pocket, and they get their eggs scrambled.
2) dumb teams get top pick and make dumb choices.
